How to Apply for a Bed in a Shared Room: What Actually Happens, Step by Step

Applying for a room at Wellness Housing takes a phone call and a tour. Here is every step, what we ask for, what we do not, and how soon you could move in.

Applying for a bed in a shared room at a Wellness Housing shared living home in Los Angeles.

The hardest part of applying is usually the first phone call. Not because the call is difficult, but because of everything people imagine is waiting on the other side of it.

An application. A background check. Questions you do not want to answer. A wait you cannot afford.

None of that is how this works. Here is the whole process, start to finish.

Step 1: You call

That is the entire first step. No form, no portal, no application fee. You call and tell us what you are looking for. We tell you what we have open, at which house, and what it costs. If we do not have space, we will say so on that call rather than leave you waiting on a maybe.

Step 2: You come and see it

We will get you in for a tour as soon as we can. Walk the house, see the room you would actually be in, see the kitchen and the common areas, meet whoever is around.

Ask us anything on that tour. What the other residents are like. How quiet it gets at night. What happens if you work early shifts. There is no question that is going to be held against you, and you should not be deciding where to live off photographs.

Step 3: We talk about payment, plainly

We will ask how you plan to pay. If that is General Relief through DPSS or another form of third party assistance, that is completely normal and about half our residents do the same. If you are paying out of pocket, also normal.

What we will not ask you for:

  • A credit check
  • A security deposit
  • A long lease

Step 4: You agree to the house rules

Short list, and we go through it with you so there are no surprises later: no alcohol or substances, no pets, single adults only, headphones for music and TV.

These are not there to make life harder. They are the reason the houses stay calm, and every person living there has agreed to the same ones.

Step 5: You move in

Bring your things. Utilities are already on and already included. Somebody will show you where everything is and introduce you around.

Then you get on with your life. That is genuinely the point of all of this.

If you are a case manager applying on behalf of a client

Same process, and you can run all of it. Call us, we will confirm availability and fit on that first call, and we can coordinate the payment side with you directly.

To be clear about what we offer: we rent beds in shared rooms, not private rooms. Every resident has a roommate, and that is what keeps the cost as low as it is.
