Wellness Housing accepts General Relief through DPSS. Here is what that covers, what it does not, and what you need to move into a room in Los Angeles.
If you receive General Relief, you have probably been told no more times than you can count.
You call about a room. It sounds workable. Then you mention how you would be paying, and the tone shifts, or the room is suddenly taken, or nobody calls back. After enough of that, you stop mentioning it. Sometimes you stop calling at all.
So let us put this at the top instead of burying it: we accept General Relief through DPSS. You are not a complication here. About half of our residents pay through some form of third party assistance. This is normal, and it has been normal the whole time.
What this actually gets you
A real room in a real home, the same as every other resident. Not a lesser version, not a separate arrangement, not a different set of rules. Same houses, same standard, same everything.
- All utilities included
- No security deposit
- No credit check
- Clean, quiet, substance-free homes
One thing worth clearing up: this is not Section 8
People mix these up constantly, and it costs everyone a phone call.
Section 8 is a voucher program for your own apartment. That is a different thing from what we do, and if you hold a voucher for a private unit, we are honestly not what you are looking for.
What we offer is a room in a shared home. Lower cost, utilities included, people around you, and available now rather than after a long wait. For a lot of people that is the faster and steadier path, but it is worth knowing the difference before you call.
Paying out of pocket is just as normal
Roughly half our residents do. Nobody here knows or asks how anyone else pays. It comes up once, at intake, and then it never comes up again. You are a resident, not a payment method.
What to do next
Call us and say you are on General Relief. That will not be a problem, and it will save you the guessing. We will walk you through what we need, what your caseworker needs from us, and when you could move in. If you already have a caseworker, bring them into the conversation and we will handle that side directly.
Do not talk yourself out of the call. Let us tell you what is possible.
